The National Park Service (NPS) is the United States federal agency that manages all national parks, many national monuments, and other conservation and historical properties with similar status. It was created on August 25, 1916, by Congress through the National Park Service Organic Act and is an agency of the United States Department of the Interior. The NPS is charged with a dual role of preserving the ecological and historical integrity of places entrusted to its management while also making them available and accessible for public use and enjoyment.

Yellowstone National Park was established as the first national park in 1872 largely through the efforts of explorer John Colter who had been a member of Captain William Clark’s expedition into the uncharted territory west of Montana in 1806. Yellowstone became known for its geothermal features especially after Naptha Springs started spewing boiling water into the air in the 1870s which led people to call it “Colter’s Hell.” Today, over three million people visit Yellowstone each year drawn by its unique natural wonders such as the Old Faithful geyser which erupts about every 90 minutes.
