Runbooks — Media & Streaming (Contribution, Processing & Delivery)


1. Onboarding Runbook (New Venue / Event Integration)

Objective: Bring a new venue, production site, or event feed into the media streaming fabric with guaranteed quality and compliance.

Step Sequence:

  1. Pre-Validation
    • Confirm DIA or waves for venue uplink.
    • Provision backup LTE/5G and optional satellite.
    • Inventory encoders, cameras, contribution gear.
  2. Edge Deployment
    • Deploy SD-WAN appliance to prioritize contribution feeds.
    • Configure VLANs for contribution (video/audio), production IT, guest internet.
  3. Zero-Touch Provisioning (ZTP)
    • Contribution encoders register with controller.
    • Templates applied for QoS (low jitter <20 ms).
  4. Security & Compliance Enrollment
    • DRM tokens enabled.
    • WAF/API security for ingest endpoints.
    • Logs streamed to SIEM for audit.
  5. Functional Tests
    • Test live video ingest to primary transcode node.
    • Validate transcoded feed distributed to CDN.
    • Confirm recording archive working.
  6. Handover
    • Event marked “Production” in CMDB.
    • AIOps synthetic viewers deployed for QoE monitoring.

2. Failover Runbook (Loss of Primary Ingest Path)

Objective: Ensure stream continuity if primary contribution link fails.

Step Sequence:

  1. Detection
    • AIOps detects jitter >20 ms, packet loss >1%.
    • Synthetic viewer reports buffering.
  2. Automatic Failover
    • SD-WAN routes feeds via secondary DIA or LTE/5G.
    • Ingest POP auto-switches to backup endpoint.
  3. Validation
    • Test feed continuity at transcode node.
    • Validate synthetic viewer stream MOS >4.0.
  4. Notification
    • NOC alerts production staff.
    • Carrier escalation for venue DIA.
  5. Recovery
    • Primary ingest restored, traffic gracefully rebalanced.
    • Failover performance logged for SLA.

3. Incident Response Runbook (DRM Bypass / Piracy Attempt)

Objective: Detect, contain, and prevent unauthorized content access or piracy.

Step Sequence:

  1. Alert
    • SIEM flags unusual token use or mass login attempts.
    • DRM system detects simultaneous unauthorized devices.
  2. Containment
    • Revoke compromised DRM keys.
    • WAF/API policies updated to block suspicious IP ranges.
    • CASB rules applied to CDN for suspicious user sessions.
  3. Eradication
    • Issue new DRM licenses.
    • Patch or update vulnerable application.
  4. Recovery
    • Legitimate users reauthenticated seamlessly.
    • Validate playback from all supported devices.
  5. Postmortem
    • Incident documented for content rights owners.
    • SOC tunes SIEM rules for piracy detection.

4. Disaster Recovery Drill Runbook (CDN / Region Outage)

Objective: Validate global stream delivery when a CDN POP or entire region goes offline.

Step Sequence:

  1. Scenario Trigger
    • Simulate CDN node outage or regional disruption.
  2. Failover Activation
    • Traffic rerouted to alternate CDN partner.
    • Anycast DNS directs viewers to healthy regions.
    • Origin shield scaling enabled.
  3. Critical App Validation
    • Synthetic viewers confirm playback in alternate region.
    • Latency/jitter thresholds validated.
    • Verify ads/monetization integrations still functional.
  4. Time-to-Recover Measurement
    • Record RTO for stream redirection (<60 sec).
    • RPO confirmed (no content lost).
  5. Debrief
    • NOC/SOC + content owners review.
    • Capacity plans adjusted for peak concurrency.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • NOC: Monitor ingest latency, CDN delivery performance.
  • SOC: Detect piracy attempts, enforce DRM.
  • Event Ops: Validate on-site feeds, backup encoders.
  • Compliance / Legal: Manage rights-owner obligations.
  • Vendors: CDN, cloud, and carrier escalation.

KPIs (Media & Streaming Runbook Metrics)

  • Onboarding: Venue live <48 hours from circuit install.
  • Failover: Stream continuity >99.99%, reroute <60 sec.
  • DRM/Piracy MTTR: <1 hour containment.
  • DR Drill: CDN reroute ≤60 sec, RTO ≤5 min for full distribution.
  • QoE: Rebuffer ratio <0.3%, start time <2 sec.

⚖️ Logos Framing

  • Onboarding = spelling a new “voice” (venue feed) into the grammar of global media.
  • Failover = synonym substitution (LTE/CDN reroute) to keep the broadcast sentence unbroken.
  • Incident Response = correcting corrupted “words” (pirated streams) to protect semantic integrity.
