IP – Internet Protocol

Internet Protocol, or IP, is the primary protocol used for communication over the Internet. It is a connectionless protocol that uses a best-effort delivery model. This means that there is no guarantee that data will be delivered in a timely or reliable manner however, IP has proven to be a robust and reliable protocol and is the backbone of the Internet.

IP addresses are unique numerical identifiers assigned to each device connected to the Internet. These addresses allow devices to communicate with each other by routing data through intermediate nodes such as routers and switches. Without IP addresses, it would not be possible for devices to communicate with each other on the global Internet.

IP provides many important services for users of the Internet including: connectionless datagram delivery; best-effort delivery; address resolution; and fragmentation and reassembly.
