GUI, or Graphical User Interface, is a type of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices through graphical icons and visual indicators. GUI provides an easy-to-use platform for users to access applications and programs quickly without having to learn complex commands or code. It has become the most popular way for people to use computers today because it makes using technology much more intuitive and efficient.

The first GUI was developed in the 1970s by Xerox PARC as part of their Alto computer system project. This early version used windows, menus, buttons, checkboxes and other graphic elements on the screen that allowed users to easily control what they were doing on their computer without needing any technical knowledge about programming languages or command line tools like MS DOS which was common at this time period.

Since then GUIs have evolved significantly with many different types being created such as Apple’s Mac OS X operating system which uses a desktop metaphor where each window represents something else (e.g., documents are represented by folders). Other popular examples include Microsoft Windows 10, Google Android, iOS from Apple Inc., etc.

Today GUIs are used almost everywhere – from smartphones all the way up large scale enterprise systems such as SAP ERP software suite. They provide an accessible environment for both novice tech users who just want basic functions out of their device but also offer sophisticated features tailored towards experienced professionals who need more advanced capabilities out of them too.

With its wide range usability options it’s no wonder why GUIs have become so ubiquitous across different platforms nowadays!
