CPE is Customer Premise Equipment that provides internet access, telephone services, and television service to customers. It is usually provided by the customer’s Local Exchange Carrier (LEC). The CPE may be owned or leased by the customer.

The most common type of CPE is a modem. A modem converts digital signals from a computer into analog signals that can travel over the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Modems come in different speeds, which dictate how fast data can be transferred between the computer and the Internet. The higher the speed, the more expensive the modem.

Another type of CPE is a router. A router connects multiple computers to each other and to other networks, such as the Internet. Routers also come in different speeds, which dictate how fast data can be transferred between computers on a network.
