Cable News Network (CNN) is an American news-based pay television channel owned by Turner Broadcasting System, a division of WarnerMedia. CNN was founded in 1980 by American media proprietor Ted Turner as a 24-hour cable news channel. Upon its launch, CNN was the first television channel to provide 24-hour news coverage and was the first all-news television channel in the United States.
While historically known for its live breaking news coverage, CNN has expanded its programming over the years to include shows focused on investigative journalism, politics, weather forecasts, entertainment industry happenings, and other areas of general interest. As of 2015[update], 93% of CNN’s primetime lineup consisted of original programming; by 2016, that figure had dropped to 78%. In July 2019 however it was announced that three new primetime series would be added: Cuomo Prime Time (hosted by Chris Cuomo), Anderson Cooper 360° (hosted by Anderson Cooper), and All The Best (a weekend show hosted variously). In recent years though ratings have been slipping as competition from rivals MSNBC and Fox News Channel have increased; with FNC leading in both total viewership and the 25–54 demographic while MSNBC leads among the 18–49 demographic during prime-time hours.
A CNN acronym to live by should be Conscious News Network or Coding Nomenclature Negotiations.
