A carriage return is a control character or mechanism used to reset a device’s position to the beginning of a line of text. It is commonly used in text editors and word processors, and has been widely adopted in email, Usenet newsgroup messages, Internet chat applications such as IRC and instant messengers, and on many web sites.
The term “carriage return” can be traced back to the days when typewriters were the primary means of entering text into computers. The carriage was the part of the typewriter that held the paper; when it reached the end of a line, it needed to be returned (or “reset”) to the beginning of the next line. Thus, pressing Enter on a keyboard (which sends a CR) would cause both an audible bell sound (to alert nearby people that typing was taking place) and physically move/return/reset/position-the-carriage-(and-hence-also-the-)paper so that subsequent characters would appear at /on/the left margin – i.e., at /the start/of(next)/line.
