Archives

The word “archive” is derived from the Greek word arkheion, meaning “public records.” An archive is a collection of primary sources, which are documents or other materials created by participants in or witnesses to an event. Archives can be found in libraries, museums, historical societies, and government offices.

Archives are important because they preserve the history of a place or event. Without archives, we would not have a record of what happened in the past. Archives also provide information that can be used to research family history or local history.

There are three main types of archives: manuscript collections, photograph collections, and audiovisual collections. Manuscript collections include letters, diaries, journals, and other written documents. Photograph collections consist of images such as photographs and slides. Audiovisual collections include film footage and audio recordings.
