IPv4 – IP version 4

IPv4 is the fourth version of Internet Protocol. It was created in 1981 and it is still in use today. IPv4 uses a 32-bit address space, which limits the number of addresses to 4,294,967,296. This limit has been reached and IPv6 was created to replace it.

IPv4 is a connectionless protocol that does not guarantee delivery of data packets. It does not provide any flow control or error control mechanisms either. Data packets are simply sent from one host to another without any checks or balances in place. This can lead to problems such as data loss or corruption if there are errors on the network.

Despite its limitations, IPv4 is still widely used today because it is compatible with a large number of devices and networks.
