FM – Frequency Modulation

Frequency Modulation (FM) is a type of modulation in which the frequency of a carrier wave is varied in accordance with the amplitude of an input signal. FM is widely used for radio broadcasting and two-way radio communications. It is also used in television broadcast systems, radar systems, and navigation aids such as VORs and RDFs.

The main advantage of FM over AM (Amplitude Modulation) is that it reduces or eliminates the effects of noise on the signal being transmitted. This makes FM much less susceptible to interference than AM. The downside to FM is that it requires more bandwidth than AM, which can be a problem when transmitting over long distances or through objects such as buildings or mountains.

FM has been found to be more efficient than AM in terms of power consumption and its ability to carry data signals at higher rates over longer distances without degradation. For these reasons, it has become the preferred choice for many applications where reliability and quality are important factors.
