DDS – Dataphone Digital Service

DDS (Dataphone Digital Service) is a data communications service that uses the public switched telephone network to provide digital data services. It was introduced in 1984 by AT&T and Bell Laboratories.

DDS provides high-speed digital data communication between computers and other devices over the existing copper twisted pair telephone lines. DDS uses time division multiplexing (TDM) to achieve higher speeds than those possible with conventional modems, and can provide speeds up to 1.544 Mbps (T1 rate).

DDS has been widely used for applications such as file transfer, remote printing, video conferencing, and others. However, with the advent of broadband technologies such as DSL and cable modem, DDS is no longer considered a state-of-the-art technology and its use has declined in recent years.
