A digital cross-connect system (DCS) is a piece of network equipment that provides the ability to connect any type of digital signal to any other type of digital signal. A DCS is used in both telecommunications and data communications networks.

A DCS typically consists of a matrix switch that can be controlled by software. The matrix switch allows any input port to be connected to any output port. This gives the DCS great flexibility in how it can route signals. For example, a single voice call could be routed from one input port to one output port, or multiple voice calls could be routed from multiple input ports to multiple output ports.

The main advantage of using a DCS is that it eliminates the need for physical cross-connects between different types of digital circuits. This reduces costs and simplifies maintenance tasks such as adding or removing circuits from the network.
