IETF – Internet Engineering Task Force is a standards organization that develops and promotes voluntary internet standards, in particular the protocols of the TCP/IP suite. It is an open, decentralized body with no formal membership or structure. Anyone may participate by contributing ideas or attending its meetings. The IETF operates under the auspices of the Internet Society, a non-profit organization founded in 1992 to provide leadership in internet-related standards, education, access, and policy.
The IETF’s work is done through a series of working groups organized around specific areas of interest. These working groups maintain lists of issues (called “issues lists”) and produce documents called Request for Comments (RFCs). Some RFCs are Proposed Standards: these define mature protocols that have been well reviewed and are considered stable enough for general deployment; others are Experimental Protocols: these document new ideas that might not be appropriate for widespread use yet; still others are Informational Protocols: these include case studies or other information about existing technology without specifying any new protocol features.
