FTP – File Transfer Protocol

FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is a standard network protocol used for the transfer of computer files between a client and server. FTP is built on a client-server model architecture and uses separate control and data connections between the client and the server.

FTP is commonly used to upload website files from a local computer to a web server. It can also be used to download files from a server to a local computer, or to transfer large amounts of data between servers. In addition, FTP can be used as an anonymous file sharing service; many public software archives make their contents available via FTP.

While FTP is simple and efficient, it does have some security risks. Because it uses separate control and data connections, passwords are sent in cleartext over the control connection which could be intercepted by an attacker.
