DISA – Direct Inward System Access

DISA, or Direct Inward System Access, is a phone system feature that allows users to dial into a company’s PBX network from any touch-tone phone. This can be a useful tool for businesses with remote employees or offices, as it allows them to connect to the main PBX network without having to use a dedicated business line. DISA can also be used by customers or clients who need to contact a company after hours; instead of waiting for someone to answer the phone, they can simply leave a message in the voicemail box.

There are some potential drawbacks of using DISA, however. First, it requires that the PBX system be properly configured and maintained; if there are any problems with the system, calls will not go through (or worse, may go through but sound garbled). Second, because anyone with access to an authorized touch-tone phone can use DISA to reach your company’s PBX network – including salespeople and telemarketers – you may find yourself bombarded with unwanted calls. Finally, because DISA dialing bypasses the normal call screening process (e.g., caller ID), it could theoretically be used by malicious individuals to place harassing or prank calls into your organization – although this is unlikely unless you have made your DISA information publicly available.
