CRC – Cyclic Redundancy Check

A CRC is a Cyclic Redundancy Check, and it’s a type of error-detecting code used in digital networks and storage devices to detect accidental changes to raw data. CRCs are similar to checksums, but they use a more sophisticated algorithm that can detect a wider range of errors.

Telecommunications systems often use CRCs to ensure that the data being transmitted has not been corrupted. For example, when you make a phone call, your voice is converted into digital signals that are sent through the phone network. At each stage along the way, these signals can be checked for errors using a CRC. If an error is detected, it can be corrected before the signal continues on its journey. This helps to ensure that you hear clearly what the other person is saying during your conversation!

CRCs are also used in other applications where data integrity needs to be maintained, such as medical image transmission and storage.
