Kilobits per second (kbps) is a unit of measurement for data transfer rates. It is commonly used to measure the speed of an internet connection. kbps is also sometimes used to measure the amount of data that can be stored on a storage device, such as a hard drive.
kbps stands for kilobits per second. A bit is a single unit of information, and one kilobit (kb) equals 1,000 bits. So, 1 kbps equals 1,000 bits per second. Kilobits are usually abbreviated as “K” or “Kb.” Mbps stands for megabits per second and Gbps stands for gigabits per second – these are just higher speeds with more zeroes! Just like how kilometers are bigger than meters which are bigger than centimeters… you get the idea!
Nowadays we pretty much always want faster internet connections because we’re constantly streaming videos, downloading files, and sending emails with large attachments – all things that take up bandwidth! And not only do we want fast download speeds (measured in Mbps), but low latency too so there’s no lag when gaming or watching videos online (measured in ms).
