The session layer is a software layer and layer number five in the seven-layer OSI model of computer networking. Its main purpose is to establish, maintain, and terminate connections between applications.
The session layer allows two applications on different hosts to communicate with each other. It establishes, maintains, and terminates the connections between them. The session layer does this by providing mechanisms for opening, closing, and managing sessions.
A session is a semi-permanent interactive information exchange between two nodes on a network. A connectionless service allows data to be exchanged without first establishing a connection (session). A connection-oriented service uses the services of the transport layer to set up virtual circuits before any data can be exchanged.
