(IPsec) is an acronym for Internet Protocol security that provides authentication and encryption for Internet Protocol (IP) traffic. It is often used in Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to secure communications between two or more devices. IPsec can be used in either transport mode or tunnel mode. In transport mode, IPsec encrypts and authenticates each packet of data that is sent between two devices. In tunnel mode, IPsec encrypts the entire communication between two devices, creating a “tunnel” through which the data can travel securely.

IPsec uses a variety of algorithms to provide encryption and authentication. Encryption algorithms such as AES-GCM which is an acronym for Advanced Encryption Standard-Galois/Counter Modecan be used to protect data from being read by unauthorized users. Authentication Secure Hash Algorithms such as SHA-256 can be used to verify that the sender of a message is who they claim to be and that the message has not been tampered with during transit.
