The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest professional organization for electrical engineers, with more than 400,000 members in over 160 countries. The IEEE promotes the engineering process of creating, developing, testing, and maintaining electrical and electronic devices and systems. The IEEE also sets standards for many types of electrical equipment.

The IEEE was founded in 1884 by a group of electricians from the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) who wanted to share their knowledge of electricity with others. Today, the IEEE is a leading publisher of scientific journals and technical books; it sponsors or cosponsors nearly 1,700 conferences each year, and it develops voluntary industry standards that have become essential to the operation of nearly all modern electronic devices.
