A carriage return is a control character or mechanism used to reset a device’s position to the beginning of a line of text. Carriage return can be accomplished by pressing the Enter key, returning the carriage to the left margin, or feeding paper through the printer so that each new line starts at the left margin.

While early teletype and punch card machines used mechanical means to accomplish this task, modern computer systems typically use an electronic signal. In fact, many computer keyboards lack a dedicated carriage return key; instead they feature two keys labeled “Enter” which send different signals: one for “newline” and one for “carriage return”. This can be confusing for users who are accustomed to using only one “Enter” key.
