The atmosphere is a vital part of our planet and life on Earth. It consists of several layers, each with its own unique properties that are essential for sustaining life.

The first layer is the troposphere which extends from the surface up to about 10 kilometers above sea level. This layer contains most of the air we breathe and it also holds clouds and precipitation.

The second layer is called the stratosphere which extends from 10 km to 50 km in altitude; this region contains ozone which protects us from harmful ultraviolet radiation coming from space as well as other gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor etc., all necessary for maintaining a livable environment on Earth’s surface.

Finally there’s the mesosphere extending between 50-80 km in altitude; here temperatures drop dramatically due to lack of atmospheric pressure thus making it an inhospitable place for living creatures but still important since meteors burn up here before reaching ground level preventing them causing damage or destruction if they hit us directly!

In addition to these three main layers there are two more:

The thermosphere (extending 80-700 km) where temperature rises again due to presence of ionized particles;

Finally, the exosphere (above 700 km) where molecules escape into outer space being too far away form gravitational pull exerted by earth’s core mass thus not able return back down towards ground levels anymore!

The word atmosphere has an interesting etymology. It comes from the late Latin phrase “atmosphaera”, which was derived from two Greek words: “atmos”, meaning vapor or steam; and “sphaira”, meaning sphere or globe. In other words, the original definition of atmosphere referred to a sort of gaseous layer that surrounded a planet like Earth.

Atmosphere is also related to several other English words with similar meanings such as “aerosphere”, “stratosphere” and even “ether”. The term aerosphere refers specifically to air surrounding a planet while stratosphere is used in reference to layers within our own atmosphere here on Earth. Ether (also spelled æther) typically references some kind of hypothetical medium thought by ancient Greeks and Romans believed existed between planets in outer space but has since been disproved by modern science.

In today’s usage however we use the word ‘atmosphere’ more generally when referring simply any mixture of gases surrounding any object such as earth regardless if it contains water vapor or not – this could refer just oxygen for example!
