A Quick History On Artificial Intelligence

AI has been around for quite some time, in fact, the term was coined back in the mid-1950s. In recent years artificial intelligence and machine learning have moved to the forefront as the technology has become more useful in all industries.

What is AI?

AI enables machines to learn from information as well as experience. As a result, devices can adjust their performance based on new information they know. As technology advances, machines have been able to perform tasks closer to human levels than ever before. The most common forms of AI that you will hear about are self-driving cars, computers that play chess, and of course, chatbots. However, there are so many more AI’s already in the market.

The History of AI

The term artificial intelligence was created in 1956, but machines that could learn human behaviors were designed before then. Most AIs made in the ’50s focused on problem-solving and performing mathematical computations. In the 60s, the government created AIs that would begin rudimentary human reasoning. One of the most well knows government AI projects to date is DARPA and the street mapping project. The same department created intelligent personal AIs in 2003, which predates Cortana, Siri, and Alexa by a large margin.

The Advancement of AI

Throughout the 50s, 60s, and 70s, neural networks were the main focus which would allow machines to think on their own. Once these networks were created, the focus shifted to machine learning from 1980 to 2010. During this time frame, machines were fed copious amounts of information, which led to present-day advancements.

Present Day AI

Present-day artificial intelligence has grown by leaps and bounds. AI has moved on from basic machine learning to deep learning and human interaction. There are now AI that the public can actually interact with that will hold human-level conversations. Some AI programs are able to create stunning art that mimics the human brush stroke. There are even programs that generate realistic responses that are almost indistinguishable from a real person.

The Power of AI

AI is important because it allows for many tasks to be computerized and performed and high volumes. This allows humans to dedicate their time and creativity to other advancements. AI also adds more knowledge and intelligence to existing structures that simply would not be possible through humans alone.
