Take

Take is a versatile word with many different meanings. In its most basic form, take can be defined as getting hold of or grasping something. For example, if you reach out your hand and take an object from someone else’s hands, you are taking it from them. Take can also mean to receive something offered or given to you; for instance, when someone offers you candy and says, β€œtake some,” they are giving it away for free and expecting you to accept the gift.

In addition to physical objects being taken by one person from another, the term ‘take’ can also refer to figuratively speaking about ideas or concepts being accepted by others; in this context, take means “to understand” or “to believe.” For example, I took his advice on how best to approach the problem – meaning I understood his suggestion/advice and decided it was a good idea, so I followed through with what he said (took = accepted).

Finally, ‘take’ is often used about time – such as taking an hour off work – which means spending one hour not working but doing something else instead during that time explicitly allocated for non-working activities like lunch break, etc. All these various definitions illustrate just how multifaceted this single word is!
