A (CAN) Campus Area Network, Corporate Area Network, or just Campus Network is a computer network made up of interconnected local area networks within a limited geographical area. Campus networks are usually designed to serve the needs of an organization, such as a university, that has multiple buildings in close proximity.
Campus networks typically use high-speed backbone technologies such as Ethernet or Fibre/Fiber Channels to connect individual Local Area Networks (LAN). Wireless technologies are also often used to connect different parts of the campus network. In some cases, campuses may be connected together using Wide Area Networking technologies such as point-to-point links or (MPLS) Multiprotocol Label-Switching Virtual Private Networks (VPN).
The main benefit of having a campus network is that it allows for easier communication and collaboration between users in different locations. For example, if two students in different buildings need to work on a project together, they can easily do so by sharing files and resources over the campus network. Additionally, Campus Networks can provide better performance than wide area networks since they have shorter distances to cover and less congestion overall.
