Text Overview

A text can be defined as any piece of written or spoken communication. It can be a book, article, speech, or even a tweet.

Texts can be divided into two categories: literary and non-literary. Literary texts include novels, poems, and plays. Non-literary texts include things like instructions manuals and textbooks. No matter what category a text falls into, it will always have an author who has something to say.

The purpose of a text is to communicate an idea or message from the author to the reader (or listener). In order for this communication to take place effectively, both the author and reader must understand the meaning of the words that are being used. This understanding is often influenced by factors such as culture and personal experience.

The word “text” has its origins in the Latin word textus, which means β€œwoven.” This is likely because early texts were written on scrolls of papyrus or parchment that were literally woven together. The first known use of the word text in English was in the 14th century.

Interestingly, the original meaning of the Latin word textus was not limited to written works; it could also refer to anything that had been woven, including cloth and tapestries. It wasn’t until later that the meaning was narrowed to refer specifically to a written work.

The modern usage of the word text can be applied to any type of communication, whether it be oral or written. In our digital age, we often think of texts as messages sent via cell phone or email. But at its core, a text is simply something that has been communicated from one person to another – regardless of how it is delivered.
