Subatomic Particles Overview

Subatomic particles are the building blocks of atoms. They are the small, basic units that make up all matter. There are three types of subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, neutrons have no charge, and electrons have a negative charge. The number of protons in an atom determines what element it is. For example, atoms with one proton are hydrogen atoms; atoms with two protons are helium atoms, and so on. These particles are so small that they cannot be seen with a microscope.

The study of subatomic particles is called particle physics. Particle physicists use powerful accelerators to smash atoms apart and study the resulting debris. By understanding the behavior of these tiny particles, scientists can unlock some of the mysteries of our universe, such as what happened in the first moments after it was created or what makes up dark matter.

Despite their small size, subatomic particles significantly impact our world. They determine everything from the color of your eyes to how long you will live. So while you may not be able to see them, these tiny building blocks play a significant role in your life!
