Near-Field Communication (NFC) is a set of communication protocols that enable two electronic devices, one of which is usually a portable device such as a smartphone, to establish communication by bringing them within 4 cm (1.6 in) of each other. NFC operates at 13.56 MHz and at speeds ranging from 106 kbit/s to 424 kbit/s.

NFC-enabled devices can act as electronic identity documents and keycards. They can be used for contactless payment systems, like those used in credit cards and electronic ticketing. NFC tags can also be embedded into packaging labels, posters, or advertisements to deliver information about the product or service when scanned by an NFC-enabled device.
