The Internet Archive is a nonprofit digital library with the stated mission of “universal access to all knowledge.” It offers free public access to collections of digitized materials, including websites, software applications/games, music, movies/videos, moving images, and nearly three million books. Its resources are provided by a mix of libraries, archives, and individual donors.

Founded in 1996 and headquartered in San Francisco’s Presidio Heights neighborhood (with additional facilities elsewhere), the Internet Archive has been called “the library of last resort.” By preserving works that are otherwise inaccessible or at risk of disappearing entirely—whether due to obsolescence or neglect—the organization aims to provide future generations with increased opportunities for creativity and scholarship. The archive also strives to increase public awareness about the importance of preserving our shared cultural heritage.
