The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a standardized system for transmitting and receiving information over the World Wide Web. HTTP is the foundation of data communication for the World Wide Web, where hypertext documents include hyperlinks to other resources that can be accessed over the network.

HTTP is a request-response protocol in which clients (typically browsers) send requests to servers (websites) in order to retrieve or transmit data. In most cases, an HTTP request will result in an HTML document being returned by the server; however, it is also possible for other types of documents such as images or PDF files to be returned.

HTTP has been in use since 1990 and has become the de facto standard for website communication. The current version of HTTP is version 1.1, which was defined in RFC 2616.
