EOT – The End-of-Transmission character

The End-of-Transmission character (EOT) is an important transmission control character used to indicate the conclusion of a transmission. It can be used for releasing circuits, disconnecting terminals or placing receive terminals in standby condition. In modern times, it is most commonly used to signal end of file and exit programs awaiting input in Unix terminal drivers. The EOT character has been given various encodings such as U+0004 , Ctrl+D and ^D in caret notation with Unicode providing two graphical representations – U+2404 ␄ SYMBOL FOR END OF TRANSMISSION and U+2301 ⌁ ELECTRIC ARROW which are both defined as “symbol for End of Transmission”.
