The Common Language Location Identifier or Communications Linkage Language Identifier also known as (CLLI) is a code used to identify telecommunications equipment. Telephone companies and other telecommunications providers use it to determine the switches, routers, and other equipment they use.

The CLLI code can consist of eight through eleven characters, divided into four parts: the first four characters identify the city, the following two characters identify the state or province, the following two characters identify the network site code, and the last character identifies the specific switch or router.

The CLLI code was developed in 1977 by Bell Laboratories as a way to standardize how telecom equipment was identified. Prior to that time, each telecom company had its own system for identifying its equipment. This made it difficult for other companies to connect with each other’s networks. The CLLI code helped solve this problem by providing a common language that all telecom companies could use.

Today, there are over 200 million pieces of communications equipment registered with CLLIs worldwide.
