The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private, non-profit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products, services, processes, systems, and personnel in the United States. ANSI also accredits organizations that certify products and personnel against these standards.

ANSI was founded in 1918 as the United Engineering Societies (UES), a federation of engineering societies from across the United States. In 1928, UES was renamed the American Standards Association (ASA). In 1966, ASA merged with the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), which itself had been established in 1901 as part of the Department of Commerce. The resulting organization was named.
