Metro Ethernet Over Fiber Is The Internet Technology Of The Future
Metro Ethernet over fiber is synonymous with speed. Its heritage can be traced to the IEEE 802.3 industry specification. This industry standard has been revised many times since 1981 when it was first published. At that time, the prevailing data transfer speed was ten megabits per second speed. That rate seems impossibly slow these days.
Early Ethernet technology used thicknet coaxial cabling. That cabling was inflexible and not easy to use. It was improved by the introduction of the thinnet cabling which allowed faster speeds. Next, the development of twisted-pair wire cabling allowed even faster speeds. Sadly, twisted-pair cabling is vulnerable to magnetic interference and distortion from cross-talk. Both these issues limit data transfer speeds.
Both these issues are resolved by fiber optic technology in the form of unshielded twisted-pair cabling. This fiber optic technology permits dependable data transfers with no electromagnetic interference or cross-talk at speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second, 100 times faster than conventional Ethernet. The technology is also referred to as 10G Ethernet.
Ethernet over fiber is a high capital cost technology. It cannot usually be justified by individuals, only buy high traffic or time sensitive internet commercial applications. Even firms connected with Cat 5 or perhaps Cat 6 twisted-pair cabling may not be able to justify an upgrade to fiber optics.
Speeds achieved by Ethernet over fiber are blistering fast, much faster than those allowed by cable, wireless or satellite internet connections. Internet users loved broadband connections when they first became available. Metro Ethernet are significantly superior to conventional broadband.
Metro Ethernet over fiber requires fiber optic infrastructure to be in place. Unfortunately, this fiber optic capacity has not been widely installed yet. It is available only in a limited number of geographic regions since, as previously mentioned, its installation requires high capital cost. If it is not installed in your area yet, watch this space.
