The concept of local exchange carriers is very unique and intriguing. There are many instances where you may come across terms like LEC, ILEC or CLEC but just do not know what they actually mean. Of course, over the years the simple concept of LECs has transformed based on the evolution of telecom markets itself.

The original term of LEC came from the divestiture of original telephone companies in the US. The entire operations was split into two categories: one that handled long distances and the other that handled local traffic. The long distance was called interexchange carriers (IXC) and the local traffic handlers were called LEC.

As the industry evolved, the LECs started gaining traction because they owned the last mile. They had complete monopoly on the local services and governments were forced to break this by introducing competition. This is where the concept of ILEC and CLECs came into picture.

The traditional LECs now became incumbent LECs or ILECs. They owned the core and the last mile. The new competitors were termed as competitive LECs of CLECs. They had their own core networks, but relied on ILECs for the last mile.

In the wireline space the CLECs have managed to create a greater impact in the retail section that the larger enterprises. This is because, CLECs primarily compete on the pricing and this attracts the retail customers more. For the larger enterprises there are many other factors which ILEC offer better value at than CLECs and hence they dominate that section.

In conclusion, the concept of LECs has a lot of significance. Initially the idea was used to differentiate telephone companies handling local calls from those handling long distance ones. Later the concept of ILECs and CLECs were introduced to break the monopoly and foster competition. Today, both CLECs and ILECs play an important part in shaping the wireline markets in most developed nations.

The last two decades or more from the time AT&T dissolved to give way to LATA, people found many choices at their disposal from the telephone services. The wide variety also led to many confused and disgruntled customers who were left with very high telephone bills, in spite of calling local numbers through the IntraLATA or Intra-Local Access and Transport Area.

Ordinary customers using the new services made supposedly local calls, but were shaken to see huge bills. Below you will find some details to help you choose the right telephone service according to your requirements and clear the doubts.

Every Local Access and Transport Area or LATA comes under one of the Regional Bell Operating Companies or RBOC and has its own geographical boundaries defined by market area, not state or area code or province.

Since LATA boundaries are different from the country’s geographical boundaries, calls may be charged as toll calls even if made within the same area code or state. This is because the called number is not within the caller’s service provider’s area, which makes it a long distance call as per the service provider’s terms.

Calls made within your region or state but under a different service provider takes assistance from the Local Exchange Carrier or LEC and not the IXC or InterXchange Carrier, which is costlier and results in excessive bills.

The calls made through IXC are charged less due to the fact that it has a highly competitive market force, whereas the calls through LEC do not have a wide market presence and so are dearly priced. Take for instance a call from Dallas to Yakima will cost much less than a call from Dallas to Fort Worth, which explains the difference in rates.

As the customer base is increasing and with it various demands, some service providers have come up with plans to charge local and long distance calls equally. If you need to make innumerable IntraLATA calls you might consider the plans coming up, but choose wisely as per the requirements before signing on the dotted line.

Telecom services providers have improved the portfolio of services they offer to their customers with the advancements in the technology. Verizon is one of the largest service providers in the United States with extensive network stretching across the country. While there a many services that it offers, the Verizon T1 line is of special importance to the customers.

The T1 line in itself has some inherent benefits. It is based on the hierarchical structure of PDH technology. What this means is that within the T1 line, multiple sub divisions can be made and each can be used to carry a different type of traffic. The T1 line can sync up to the needs of the service type accordingly.

While the technology is quite versatile, Verizon has come out with a varied rate plans for the customers to tap into this technology too. The Subscriber access line is a simple T1 from the customer location to the wire center. This service is offered with fixed or recurring rates. The channel mileage service comes with fixed charges and some mileage charges based on airline mileage. Lastly, the T1 line can be delivered with special options like hubbing, signalling and others. These options have different rates associated with them.

The T1 lines in the Verizon network can be transported over the SONET network across the nation. As a result, the links are always protected from failure. The SONET redundancy ensures a high level of link availability.

There are multiple applications of the Verizon T1 line. For the CLECs this is the ideal link to connect their customers in Verizon territory to their POPs. Similarly, the CLECs can also buy T1 links for connect their own POPs for special data services. Enterprises can use these lines to connect their offices directly too. Such links are used for computer to computer or LAN to LAN connections over the WAN.

The T1 line is also great for transferring compressed video signals. These lines are commonly used to connect the cellular towers with the switching centres too. Being built for voice services initially, the T1 line extends itself to cellular networks well.

While the T1 service in itself is not a new service, it was not highly popular in the beginning. The two main reasons were the high price for the service and the lack of traffic from businesses to justify such investments. With technological advancements, the price points have come down for the T1 Internet lines. At the same time with growing interconnectivity the need for a service like T1 is also justified for the business. This has led to an increase in demand for Verizon T1 line service.
