Local loop is the fundamental concept in telecommunications. Anyone who has studied something on telephony or telecom in general would have come across this time. In the past few decades this concept gained a lot of traction because the original incumbents had complete monopoly on it; however things have been changing and the monopoly advantage is slowly eroding.

The original local loop was the copper line from the customer to the serving central office. It is also referred to as the last mile, as typically that is the section of the network that it covers. Today, though copper is not the only link on the last mile. We also have wireless solutions like WiMax and even metro fiber lines.

As stated earlier, this concept became popular as it was a major hindrance in fostering competition. With monopolistic ownership of the last mile, incumbents controlled the entire telecom market not allowing new competitors to enter. Every competitor had to lease the last mile from the incumbent and this meant they could never truly compete.

One of the first steps in eroding this incumbent advantage was the unbundling of the loop. Regulators in various nations made it mandatory that incumbents have to lease the last mile to competitors at a discount. This helped new entrants to at least compete with incumbents on some level ground.

Of course, the new technological advancements are getting rid of this dependency totally. With fibre based solutions, any service provider can lay fibre links to the customer location itself. Alternatively, one can go with the inexpensive wireless solutions in the last mile where there is no cable installation required at all.

In summary, the local loop is a very simple concept that has a far reaching impact on the telecom business in generally. Traditionally, due to the complete ownership of last mile, incumbents controlled the markets completely. However with new regulatory changes like unbundling and wireless and fibre solutions things are changing.
