Is The Ethernet Over Fibre Solution For You?

One of the new challenges that many enterprises are now facing is selecting a good and reliable connectivity solution. There are just too many alternatives from too many service providers which makes things quite complicated. One of the new solutions on offer is the Ethernet over Fibre. This is a very good solution for the right customer.

Traditionally, the primary need for most enterprises was the voice connection and some data links to transfer information. For such needs, a solution like the T1 was just perfect and ideal. However, the latest needs are for very high speed pipes to transfer large amount of data and T1s cannot sustain this on large scale.

The copper network that has been extensively laid down by the telcos over the years is not good enough to support this rapidly growing need for higher bandwidth. The technological breakthroughs in the copper world are not keeping pace with the growing bandwidth demand. As a result, the medium itself needs a revamp and this is where the fiber networks become relevant.

Fibre as a transmission medium is quite superior to the copper one. With signals being sent a lights, the fibre link is immune to cross talks, electromagnetic surges and other such problems which are common in copper. Another significant benefit is that on the same physical fibre multiple signals can be sent using WDM or DWDM solutions. This means that the existing physical medium can support low as well as very high bandwidths.

Ethernet has been one of the most successful technologies in communications history. The secret behind its success is the ease of implementation and constant standards evolution. With time, new standards have evolved that have retained the same ease of installation, setup and operations of the traditional Ethernet while improving on the bandwidth.

With fibre networks becoming popular and new Gigabit Ethernet products becoming commonplace, Ethernet over fibre had to happen at some point. On the customer demand side too there has been some favorable developments in metros. With many high rise buildings hosting many customers, the need for high bandwidths at buildings is a reality today. With all things falling in place, this solution has found a sweet spot in all aspects.

So it is clear that the Ethernet over Fiber solution does have a unique market for itself. The customers in metros who need high speed links can benefit immensely from this solution. Given its potential, there are many service providers offering this solution. This encourages competition and is great for such a solution.
