Comcast Speed Upgrades Zipping Right Along – DOCSIS 3.0 expands into 27 additional California communities

Comcast says they'll have 80% of their entire footprint upgraded with the faster speeds by the end of this year next week, and their entire customer base upgraded by the end of 2010 - roughly 40 million homes and businesses passed. The cable giant recently announced that they're raising the cable modem rental fee from $3 to $5 to help pay for the upgrades -- which one Comcast executive once proclaimed could be completed with " couch change ." Comcast this week announced that 27 additional Northern California communities have been upgraded, which, as in all upgraded markets, means doubled standard broadband tiers, and access to new 22 and 50 Mbps speeds.
