DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line or Digital Subscriber Loop and it is a technology that enables the user to have access to the high speed internet. These days DSL is referred to Digital Subscriber Line. It’s the one and the same thing and the new term is widely adopted because it’s more market friendly. DSL is different from the conventional internet line as it can be used at the same time with the active phone line. Both the lines use the same cable but there is difference in the frequency of both, DSL being transmitted on higher frequency and phone line on lower frequency.

DSL speed ranges from 256 kilobits per second to 24, 000 kilobits per second. The speed of the DSL depends upon line quality, service level and the technology that the DSL provider is using. Generally the download speed is higher in DSL than the upload speeds.

The DSL requires a DSL modem to be installed on the customer’s end. This modem is easy to install and it need few physical connections and it has to be connected to the DSL transceiver through the telephone line. You also need to setup DSL on you PC. The DSL then synchronizes with the DSL transceiver to give you the data packets.

The DSL modem converts the data that is sent from into voltage signal which then is sent to the phone line and vice versa. This whole procedure is carried on by the usage of hardware and software and it does not interfere with the telephone signals.

The DSL and telephone signals are not always separated automatically but often the DSL provider provides a device that splits the lines at the user end. This separates the low frequency signals from the high frequency signals.

DSL has many benefits over the other types of internet. It is super fast, it is much more secure as the firewall is always installed at both ends and the best thing with a DSL is that you can leave the internet connected and still use a phone line. You can make calls and receive the calls while the internet is connected and is functional. There is no interference of any kind between the two.

DSL actually uses the major portion of the telephone wire’s bandwidth. The bandwidth of the telephone line is much more than it is used by the telephone itself. It only used a very small portion and the rest remains free. The DSL technology makes use of that free portion and it asks for nothing more to be wired.

Along with these advantages, there are certain disadvantages of DSL as well. The foremost being the issue with the speed of the DSL and the distance from the provider’s central office. The signal strength will weaken as you move away from the central office where the equipment is installed. The other disadvantage is the lower speed while uploading the files. The downloading is much faster than the uploading in DSL connections. And the last major disadvantage is that the DSL service is yet unavailable in many remote areas.
