Multiprotocol Label Switching

What Is MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching)?

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a mechanism in high-performance telecommunications networks which directs and carries data from one network node to the next. MPLS makes it easy to create "virtual links" between distant nodes. It can encapsulate packets of various network protocols.

Should You Upgrade To MPLS?

Just because a product says MPLS on it doesn't mean the entire range of MPLS capabilities are included. In fact, several partial MPLS system implementations exist (which include Cisco) and most of them cannot offer potentially necessary services such as support for multiple services being carried at once.

What is MPLS?

MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) is packet-delivery based technology that meets industry standards and is used to speed up and make easier to manage network traffic flow for superior QoS (quality of service) that, for instance, provides real-time video and sound and meets bandwidth requirements of service level agreements (SLAs). The reason that MPLS is "multiprotocol" is due to the fact that it is compatible with the Asynchronous Transport Mode (ATM), Internet Protocol (IP), and frame relay network protocols.
