From Dial Up To Mobile Satellite Internet – The Evolution Of Online Technologies
Over the past few years, the internet has been adopted as the communication method of choice for a vast number of people across the globe. However, few people know exactly how it works. On a simple level, the internet is made up of a number of main “level 1″ networks, which are connected together across the world by fiber cabling and satellites. The main networks connect to smaller networks, which are often on a national scale, through a process called peering. These smaller networks are often owned by end-user ISPs, which can provide their service through ADSL, cable, mobile satellite internet or a number of other means.
Although there are now a number of technologies used to access the net, the first major technology that was released was called dial up. It used a modem (which stands for modulator/demodulator) to convert digital signals to audio, for transmission across the standard phone network.
Dial up allows for transfer speeds of up to 56 Kb/s or, with certain types of compression, 64 Kb/s. It was the main method of accessing the internet until around the year 2000. Since then the technology has been superseded, and “broadband” technologies have become dominant.
There are a number of broadband technologies available. However, the two most widely adopted across the world are ADSL and a widely used service called cable broadband. ADSL is a type of connection that allows for data to be transmitted at relatively high speed over a copper telephone line.
The data is broadcast in a frequency range that is far removed from the frequencies the human ear can detect. This means that inexpensive filters can be placed on the end of all phone sockets, allowing for the separation of audio – when a person makes a call – and the data stream.
ADSL suffers a few drawbacks. Chief amongst these is that the signal degrades the further away from the telephone exchange the end point is located. This means that a person who lives a significant distance from their nearest exchange may only be able to receive limited bandwidth.
The alternative to ADSL is cable broadband. Cable broadband uses an existing cable TV network to provision a broadband service. Most cable TV networks are known as “HFC” networks, which stands for “hybrid fiber co-ax”. This means that there is fiber optic cable to take signals to and from the multiplexer in the customers’ local areas, and then a copper co-axial cable to take the signal the remainder of the way to the individual customers’ houses.
Although these two services are the “standard” offerings, they do suffer one drawback: They require a physical connection for the service to be provided. There are now also a number of technologies that although those in rural or otherwise sparsely populated areas access the net; the main offering within this category of services is satellite broadband.
The technology behind the internet has progressed from dial up to portable satellite internet in just a few short years; it is likely to evolve even further in the coming years, to bring the world slightly closed together.
