To understand what VPLS is, you need to understand what a Virtual Private Network is. A local area network (LAN) is simply two or more computers connected locally, such as in the same room or building. Some of the main benefits of this are high-speed transfers, security as the business’ information is separate from the Internet and therefore only accessed by verified people and also provides the ability to monitor the computers connected. A VPN allows users, such as employees, to access this LAN over the Internet.
A VPLS uses similar methods. By connecting multiple LANs across different locations, a single LAN can be emulated to allow users to access a variety of business resources. These LANs are connected via the Internet using tunneling services, which securely transfer information, to other LANs. VPLS allows users to simply connect as if connecting to a LAN network rather than the Internet.
VPLS provides security, as all information and data is transferred either within their own networks or through tunneling points, which encrypt information and keep it separate from the Internet. This allows for the best protection for business information possible. Furthermore, it is easy to grow simply by adding more servers and networks, making it very scalable, and users can generally connect from wherever they wish. Additionally, all the information sent goes through a fault-tolerance system, which ensures the information sent is correct.
