Comcast Speed Upgrades Zipping Right Along – DOCSIS 3.0 expands into 27 additional California communities

Comcast says they'll have 80% of their entire footprint upgraded with the faster speeds by the end of this year next week, and their entire customer base upgraded by the end of 2010 - roughly 40 million homes and businesses passed. The cable giant recently announced that they're raising the cable modem rental fee from $3 to $5 to help pay for the upgrades -- which one Comcast executive once proclaimed could be completed with " couch change ." Comcast this week announced that 27 additional Northern California communities have been upgraded, which, as in all upgraded markets, means doubled standard broadband tiers, and access to new 22 and 50 Mbps speeds. You can keep tabs on Comcast's ongoing deployments in this thread in our Comcast forum, which frequently has insider leaks on future launch markets

Almost Two Million Mobile WiMAX Subscribers Expected by End of 2009 – ABI Research

Mobile WiMax subscribers are expected to reach 2 million by the end of 2009, according to a recent report from ABI Research. WiMax’s subscriber numbers are rising, but the picture is quite mixed, according to the report. Clearwire, the majority share of which is owned by Sprint Nextel, now claims 173,000 subscribers, while Russia’s Yota reached 200,000 in October and PackOne, in Malaysia, claims 130,000 subscribers.

Printing Windows Could Save $40 Billion per Year

Though they provide beautiful views of the surrounding areas, windows are among the most fearsome enemies of energy efficiency. More than 30 percent of the energy consumed in the United States, the largest electricity provider in the world, goes to remedying the situations that windows create. The current is used to make up for heat loss and gains, especially during winter and summer

BT’s Vision – The Fibre Optics Plan

BT Group plc - formerly known as British Telecommunications - has undertaken an ambitious and arduous task: Providing high-speed broadband on a fibre optic backbone to nearly half of the UK population. Demands on the ancient copper wires with the explosion of internet video and other high-density transmissions has forced BT to literally double and redouble their initial plans to provide fibre optics to 1 million homes to 10 million homes with Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) access by 2012. This equates to approximately 40% of the population.

Cable Industry’s ‘Adoption Plus’: Altruism Or PR Stunt? – Helping the poor, or getting taxpayers to fund in school ad campaigns?

The cable industry this week is busy patting itself on the back for a new initiative they've dubbed "Adoption Plus." According to the cable industry's chief lobbying and PR arm, the National Cable And Telecommunications Association, Adoption Plus has been created to "promote sustainable broadband adoption for a vitally important-but-vulnerable population" -- namely middle school-aged children in low income households without broadband. As such, the industry says they're offering discounted broadband to low income homes. In a blog post , NCTA boss Kyle McSlarrow highlights the plan as such: A+ would promote the adoption of broadband service to households that do not currently receive it, by offering comprehensive digital media literacy education, discounted computers, and discounted home broadband service to households representing up to 3.5 million American children in grades 6 through 9 who are eligible to receive a free or reduced-cost meal through the National School Lunch Program.
