What Can the Digital Signal 1-DS1-T1 Line Be Used For?

When it first came out in the 90's the Digital signal 1 line, or DS1 was used by large companies and phone companies only. However, it's now used in many different ways and some of them are by normal people who are connecting through their home desktop.
