What Exactly Is A T1 Line?

Having a home telephone service is now more common than ever before. When a phone line is run to your house from the telephone company, they are providing you with a great service and we can understand what they are telling us about it. Now, when they begin talking about a T1 line, we tend to get a little lost.

When a regular phone line is hooked up to your house, it is usually brought in using copper wires. Your voice will be transferred through a signal called an analog signal. The analog signals work well for a home phone because there are usually not more than a couple lines being used at a time and only a couple people using the services.

When you start thinking about an office setting, their needs for service are much more demanding. There are multiple people using the internet as well as the phone lines. A normal analog phone line would not put up the type of service that a company will need. That is why they turn to a provider of a T1 line.

A T1 line allows voice data to travel a lot quicker than a regular analog line by using a fiber optic system. The T1 line is plugged into an office phone system when it is being used to transmit voice conversations. If the company wants the service to transfer electronic data, it will be plugged into a company’s modem.

So how much faster is the T1 line in comparison to the regular analog phone line? It is about sixty times faster. The data will be transferred much quicker than when using a regular analog line. The T1 line is very reliable when used in a medium to large sized office setting.

It will take a lot for a T1 line to get bogged down. If a company is using it for their telephone needs or even their data transfer needs it would take a lot of traffic to make the line malfunction. For example, if everyone in the office decided that they wanted to download picture files or put music on their MP3′s at the exact same time, this may cause the T1 line to act slower.

For basic internet browsing uses in the office this line would be perfect. Many hundreds of people could use the T1 line if they are performing regular office tasks such as making and taking phone calls or just surfing the internet. These types of daily tasks should not cause any slow down with the T1 line.

There is a cost involved with the use of the T1 line. Somewhere between three hundred to one thousand dollars is a fair estimate for a monthly fee for the service. This fee includes fees for the provider of the T1 line as well as for the ISP’s that will be providing the web server for the line.

If an extremely large company was looking to install a T1 line, it might be suggested that they purchase services of a larger type line. While the T1 line is great for a small or average sized office, the needs of a much larger company may not be able to be met with the T1 line.
