A T1 Line – What Exactly Is It?
We are all familiar with the idea that a phone company can run a phone line out to your home and you can begin using the telephone from home. When a phone company begins talking about a T1 line, we can be a little confused.
A regular phone service to your home is usually provided through copper wires and provides you with the ability to transfer your voice with an analog signal. This type of set up works fine from your home because you are only a few people using that analog line.
When it comes to a larger company, their needs are much greater. They tend to have many people using telephones and internet at one time. A regular analog line will not do the job that is needed. This is when a company will turn to a T1 line. But what exactly is it?
A T1 line is a fiber optic line. It can carry voice data at a much quicker speed than a regular analog line. If a company is using the T1 line for telephone calls, it is usually plugged into their office phone system. If it is being used to transfer data from personal computers, it is usually plugged into the companies modem.
The T1 line can carry about sixty times more data than a regular modem that you may have installed in your home. It can be used to provide data or phone services to many different people. It is a very reliable line and is found to be very useful for an office setting.
If an office installs a T1 line to handle their daily phone and or data transfer needs, the chances that the T1 line will be bogged down are very slim. If many people in the office are all trying to download their favorite music onto their MP3′s at the exact same time it may cause the system to slow a little but this happening in an office setting is pretty rare.
If the T1 line is being used for basic internet browsing in the office, it can handle hundreds of people on the line at a time. This is more likely the case in an office environment. The general uses for the internet and phone systems for an office should be handled very nicely with a T1 line.
The cost involved in operating a T1 line can be substantial. The average charge is between two hundred fifty dollars and one thousand dollars per month. These fees include charges billed by the provider of the T1 line as well as fees for the ISP’s. Using a T1 line will require that the line be connected via a web server.
There are many much faster and more accommodating lines to choose from for a very large company. If the company has over a hundred employees that will all be using the T1 line, it is a good idea that the company invest in a higher power communication line. For the average sized company, a T1 line will work just fine.
